Day 35

Seton was up most of the evening crying and fussing, it started around 4:30pm and continued until around 1:30am he finally decided to stop crying but did not want to sleep…at 5:30am he finally decided it was time for bed. I wish I knew what was wrong with him we tried everything, Tylenol, Mylicon (an anti-gas medicine), Orajel, rocking, patting, swaddling, surrounding him and touching as much of his little body as I could…nothing worked. We had a nurse here last night so Zane and I got to stay in bed...although for some reason I am still tired. This was the first day & night he seemed to be in pain, the other nights he just did not want to sleep but was not fussy. I hear him in there fussing now so he slept til 8am --2.5 hours is not enough for his brain, that’s not enough for anyone! Maybe he will go back to sleep after we get his food hooked up in a little bit. Poor little guy, I just feel so sorry for him and don’t know how to help him. I thought he had more teeth coming in but since the Tylenol and Orajel did not work my theory may not be right…I guess we will see in a day or so. I know that babies go through spells of not sleeping and fussing but with his brain being small it needs all the rest it can get so that it does not have more seizure activity; it also needs to rest in order to function to its highest ability.
Today’s prayer request is for peaceful sleep (at night, preferably) and pain-free days, nights, and even weeks.

29 He gives strength to the weary
   and increases the power of the weak.
30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
   and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the LORD
   will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
   they will run and not grow weary,
   they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:29-31

  1. My son(16 mo) has lots of food allergies. He even had a reaction to rice cereal when we first started it. Just incase you are unaware but the Gerber brand has dairy in its rice cereal. We ended up switching to the Beechum brand and had no issues.

    I'll be praying for Seton to be feeling good day.

  4. Hi Shawna, I know you probably get lots of recommendations on things to try...but I wanted to throw this one out there for you. We use Melatonin with Tessa. After a year of not knowing what in the world to do for her to get her to rest at night...her doctor told us about this and it has been our sanity. Here's a link to the particular one we buy: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&sugexp=pfwc&gs_nf=1&tok=kaxpPLc5e44OYICPSW8W1w&cp=5&gs_id=i&xhr=t&q=melatonin&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1680&bih=959&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=3381514171252557807&sa=X&ei=4lFGT6agEMfAtgefquSFDg&sqi=2&ved=0CGwQ8wIwBA

    I know I don't know the logistics of giving Seton 'oral' meds...but for Tessa, we use a pill crusher to crush up the 1 mg tablets and then mix them in a tiny bit of water in a bottle to dissolve. We started with 1 mg and have worked our way up to 3, 1 mg tablets every night. It is the only...the only thing that consistently helps her to fall asleep peacefully. She will still wake up a few times in the night, but it isn't near like it used to be. And since it's just a neurohormone, we feel pretty comfortable with giving it to her on a consistent basis. I remember her doctor saying that children with brain damage sometimes don't produce enough of this hormone on their own...and since it's what helps them distinguish night from day, not having enough can be such a challenge.
    Praying for sweet Seton! Thank you for allowing us into the details of your prayers for your sweet little boy!

    1. one more thing...I did read somewhere that there was a potential concern with using melatonin for children with seizure disorder. We have had no problems with Tessa and her doctor has never mentioned there being a potential for the melatonin to cause seizures or to interfere with the seizure medicine she is on. I just couldn't believe it took an entire year to find out there was a hormone that Tessa could be missing because of her brain damage. I believe it now ;)
