Day 13

Since Seton was born he has been on a list of medications, including pain killers and an iron supplement. Now he only takes 3 on a regular basis: Xopenex for his breathing treatments, Phenobarbital for seizures and Baclofen for spasticity. Today we are going to pray for his spasticity, so that he can stop taking the Baclofen. He gets a small dose 3 times a day, with a 4th dose if needed to help him sleep. It is a muscle relaxer that works at the level of his spinal cord. So this is my theory…It would be hard to teach/ train your muscles how work properly if you are always trying to relax them??

Monday night Seton was awake from 2:00am-5:00am. He was a little fussy, but very restless (or jittery). I really did not want to give him his extra dose of Baclofen…I wanted God to do it. So I leaned over held on to his jerking legs with one hand and put my other hand on his head and prayed for God to calm him down and relax his muscles. While praying over Seton, his legs began to relax and he went right to sleep. Seton slept great from 5:00am-8:30am.

I tell you that story because I want to get him off all his medications. I know God can relax Seton’s muscles when they need to be relaxed and help him to use them properly when he needs them. So that is what we are praying for today, his spasticity to stop so that we are able to stop giving him the Baclofen.

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
James 5:13-16

  1. I had a patient this weekend who takes Baclofen, and you could just see the pain on his face when his muscles would start spasming. I can only imagine how hard this is for you to see every day. :( I pray that sweet Seton is able to be taken off this medicine, and that ALL of your prayers are answered for him.

  2. Shawna, I have been hearing about lavender oil for use in helping to calm and relax babies. My nephew's wife bought it in a lotion to rub on her boys before bed. Maybe you could look into the oils and rub a little on Seton's feet before he goes to bed. Just an idea to look into and see if you think it might help in your case. Just be cautious it looks very potent use sparingly.
One side note, I want to encourage you with your list of things to pray for, it may not happen today, or tomorrow but by faith in God's healing power it can be done. Look at what God has already done this past year in his life. We serve a BIG GOD, His mercies are new every morning.

  3. Shawna, Tessa has high tone in her arms and legs but very lone tone in her trunk and neck. Because of this combination, they have never started her on Baclofen, since it would likely make her trunk and neck muscles that much weaker. We have been told that some time down the road, a Baclofen pump might be helpful for her...but an unknown just like most everything else.
I can absolutely relate to the 'restless and jittery'. There are so many helpless moments as a parent when it comes to our children, and this is one that is a constant for us. You have inspired me to trust the Lord to sooth Tessa's pain and to help relax her muscles. To stop and consider that in our helpless moments, the Lord is so near, just waiting for us to allow Him to step in. Praying for Seton to come off of the Baclofen...and for Tessa's future not to include it. In your 13 days thus far, I have shared your Mother's heart and your prayers Seton. Seton is so blessed and I am so thankful for how you are inspiring me.
